BT Adopt a Phone Box Programme

Closed 31 Jan 2021

Opened 13 Jan 2021

Overview

British Telecom (BT) have launched an Adopt a Phone Box Programme.

There are still around 5,000 red phone boxes throughout the UK which can be adopted.

The Adopt a Phone Box Programme enables communities to retain its iconic red phone box. The cost to adopt a phone box is £4 and the scheme is open to the following bodies:

  • Recognised local authority (e.g. District/Borough Council)
  • Parish/Community/Town Council or equivalent
  • Registered charity
  • Private land owner (anyone who has a telephone box on their land)

The Adopt a Phone Box Programme has been successful in transforming unused phone boxes and helps to preserve the heritage of the red phone box, particularly in rural locations.

Red phone boxes can be adopted, subject to certain criteria, such as low use and those not required for future plans.

BT and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council are delighted to give communities the opportunity to get back in touch with the remaining phone boxes and make them once again an asset that local people can enjoy.
